Lunches on the road

Tomorrow is the start of the big Primal road trip.  Lunch needs to be in Muskogee, Ok.  This turns out to be a pretty friendly town for a Primal girl.  There's apparently BBQ on every corner.  I think I'll skip the supplies in our car and go straight for some smoked meaty goodness.  I hate to reinforce the stereotype that Paleo or Primal eating is basically an all you can eat meat smorgasbord, but local BBQ should be indulged in.  Hopefully, there will be green beans or a salad on the side, but if not, I can do an all meat lunch.
Lunches at the inlaws' house is sort of left up to us.  That's a very good thing.  I'll be making a lot of "Big Ass Salads".  If you don't know exactly what that is, go to Mark's Daily Apple website and let Mark Sisson teach you how to make one.
Hmmm, turns out lunch might be the easiest meal to deal with in general.  When in doubt, carry a small bottle of nice quality oil and vinegar in your bag and add it to any salad you can get your hands on.
Dinner will be the hardest meal to deal with by far.  Tomorrow, on the road, we will be tired, hungry, and limited in choices.  Check back to see how we survive!
No exercise tomorrow. 14 hours on the road...sheesh!

Planning the Plan of Awesomness- Breakfasts

So... the big primal road trip is commencing in four days.  So far, my plan includes carrying a bag and a small cooler of emergency food.  I don't do protein shakes on a daily basis anymore, but for road tripping, I don't think I can do any better.  Free Hotel breakfast is essentially horrible.  Most of it is processed grain, and what's left is bizzaro egg product, and sausage from God only knows what source. My husband usually combines the mystery sausage with the yogurt cups, but I'm not willing to go there this trip.  So, for me, breakfast on the road will be mixed in my magic bullet in the hotel room, and will consist of single serving sized So Brand unsweetened coconut milk, blended with a packet of J Robb egg white protein and a spoon of almond butter. It's a couple of mornings.  Big deal.  While at the In-laws, I think I will alternate the shake type breakfast, (with spinach and frozen berries added) with egg and vegetable breakfast. They will have eggs and veggies in their fridge.  If not, there's a Whole Foods nearby.  Unsweetened Greek Yogurt might come into play if boredom sets in.  Hey, whatever keeps me off the pancake and waffle wagon. Lunch is a bigger dilemma.  More on this tomorrow...

Preparing for paleo road trip

I have a nine day road trip coming up in June.  I'll admit it.  Traveling freaks me out.  I almost always slither back into old habits.  Everything is harder! Driving for two days means less sleep, less exercise, and oh Jesus... Road food.  Staying in my in-laws house means poor sleep, less exercise, and oh crap...in law food!  Don't get me wrong. My in laws are extremely hospitable, but Paleo? Primal? Absolutely not.  Most meals include meat, surrounded by four or five starches, and maybe a salad. (From a bag.)  Chinese food is abundant as well.
To survive all this, I'm devising a master plan to up the sleep and exercise, and minimize the  Midwestern diet fare.  Planning is half the battle, commitment to the plan will be the kicker.

Bloggers need to blog!

Ok... this is ridiculous.  I want to be a blogger, but I don't blog!  I ran into Jimmy Moore at Paleofx this year.  I told him that per his advice, I had started this blog.  He said, "Ya... I saw that.  Great idea, but you never blog.  If you want to be a blogger, you have to blog."
You know, I like to write.  I really do, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm going to bore readers.  I'm seriously afraid that my blog will just be a pain in the reader's ass, but I'm going to take a leap of faith that my experiences might just touch one person out there and help them. If I can do that, then the bored readers won't matter.
So... Fresh start!  I'm taking a road trip this summer, and I plan to blog about my escapades trying to stay primal/paleo across America.  I'm also going to start relaying my favorite products, recipes, and strategies.  Look for more and more posts coming soon!

Easter Sunday food porn

This year for Easter, we're having friends over for dinner. Two are friends with absolutely no desire to eat Paleo or Primal style. The other two are embarking on their first Paleo 30 day challenge. The need to please these four different eaters has given me the inspiration to break out the big gun recipe for meat and serve Korean grass fed short ribs from Nom Nom Paleo, accompanied by baked sweet potatoes, and broccoli from the farmers market. Because it's Easter, and we're all in the mood for a treat, I'm making brownies from The Food Lovers Make it Paleo book. Brownies? Yes, brownies! I really don't advocate the use of paleo desserts on a regular basis, but for Easter? Yea... I think we need a little chocolate. I think it's important to make a good food impression. Look for a picture of all this tastiness tomorrow.

Primary Primal Post

I was listening to Jimmy Moore on the Balanced Bites podcast last week. The discussion was about all the women who have blogged about feeling too imperfect to be a spokesperson for The Paleo lifestyle. I have to admit that I can really identify with this feeling, but I was surprised by the number of women I look up to that were feeling the same way. Jimmy then put out the request for everyone in this wellness movement to do what they can to get the message out there. Blog, do a podcast, write a song, invent recipes, talk to people! Basically, he said to be brave and be a voice for health. So I've decided to start blogging for the first time. I can't decide which is my biggest worry: that no one will read it, that people will read it but hate it, or that my kids will read it and make fun of me. Really, when I think about it, all of these worries are pretty stupid. I can survive all three of these catastrophes put together. Because I love Nom Nom Paleo's blog so much, I'll try to include one of my favorite features from her postings. I'll put some of our meals on display to give readers ideas about what to put in the pie-hole tonight.
